The magical city of Lima is the capital and largest city of Peru, in the same time being one of the most interesting and diverse tourist destinations on the continent. The history of Lima goes back for almost half a millennia, when the Spanish conquistador Francisco Pizarro founded the city that acted as the headquarters of the Spanish colonial dominance for 300 years. Today, the city still bears many signs of its old age and colonial beginnings, with beautiful architecture and charming landmarks. Lima is now a major metropolis, a mix of old and new, of rich and poor areas, a garden oasis between the desert and the ocean.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

There is a wide variety of things to see and experience while traveling to Lima. Any visit should probably start with the magnificent Plaza de Armas or Plaza Mayor, the biggest and most important square of the city, flanked by historical buildings. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Government Palace is the official seat of presidency, occupying an important place from Inca times. Still surrounding the square, the Cathedral of Lima is an imposing but beautiful landmark. Other historical attractions include the Archbishop Palace, City Hall, Convento de San Francisco, Congreso de la Republica, as well as a great number of museums, palaces, parks and monuments. The entire historical centre of Lima is a UNESCO World Heritage Site.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Beyond its exquisite centre, the neighborhoods of Lima are full of character, showing a unique diversity of attractions and experiences. Baranco district is the best destination for nightlife and entertainment, while the Miraflores is an upscale district known for restaurants and shopping. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Other landmarks of the city include Church of San Francisco and its catacombs; Aliaga House is the oldest in the Americas, the Huaca Pucllana archaeological site, the Magic Water Circuit and many others. Lima is also one of the greatest gastronomic destinations in the world, a perfect way to experience the authentic Peruvian cuisine. Other attractions include the amazing beaches south of the city, as well as the fascinating festivals held each year.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
